John Gay

John Gay's Fables, Volume 1

The Fables, Volume 1 were published in 1727. Written by the author of The Beggar's Opera, they were dedicated to the infant son of George II who, sadly, grew up to become known as Butcher Cumberland.

John Gay's epitaph to himself is,

Life is a jest; and all things show it,

I thought so once: but now I know it.
